I have strange issues with my fuel system. I have replaced the 4 fuel lines including new "o" rings and finally got the car started but I noticed that there is a lot of air bubbles in the hose from the pump to the fuel filter. The fuel filter is brand new and the new seal is also installed. Anyone any idea where I should look next. I'm strarting to get the feeling that it is sucking air somewhere before the fuel pump or perhaps around the fuel tank. Thanks for any input you might have for me.

Most air gets in around the fuel filter, one thing that can happen ids that the pipes my get an indentation where the ring fits and no longer be air tight, and this can be on the tanks side or the return to tank. after the car as been started, turn off and take a look a little later to see if you can see what side of the filter the air is getting in.

The whole system is in the link, and they all open after BM

Actually I can see now that even when the engine is running there is a lot of air in the line from the pump to the fuel filter (thank god for new lines). I have replaced the fuel filter and fuel filter housing and would assume that the problem is not around there. After I switch the car off it won't start anymore due to the air in line I assume.

I would replace that length of pipe with new O rings, best to use MB pipe owing to size variations

Hi Malcom,

Good to hear from you! All the fuel lines were replaced today with original MB lines with the "o" rings attached. It is all getting wierd as all lines, "o" rings are brand new and all original MB. Needless to say that now I'm very puzzled where it is sucking air! I mean when the engine runs at idle there is so much air running in this line (half air half fuel). If I rev up idle speed to about 2,000 rpm the engine stops as lack of fuel. I can start the engine again with filling the fuel filter with diesel and trick the car (Trottle body trick)she starts right up and runs forever till I switch it off or run a higher RPM.

Have you put the correct o-ring on the fuel filter? Also check the pre-filter o-ring alongside it.

Also, if your pump has one, check the fuel shutoff valve o-ring (between the valve and pump body).

I got a brand new fuel filter and housing including the the rubber seal, I mean everything is new by now unless I miss something. I live in the Caribbean (what is great) but we don't have any MB service out here, it does make it difficult to repair the MB here as I'm on my own. I have replaced the high pressure pump as I had another one in stock (just in case). This is driving me nuts! Your site really rocks as this is a great help to me!
Thanks, Paul

Was it like this, before you changed the pipes, and o rings.

No I did not have that problem before but someone who broke into my house was funny enough to all my electronics, cash, passport nd keys! I stopped the guy while he was starting the MB with all my stuff inside (hit him through my side window, broke that too though)but after a fight he got away with "only" my keys. You don't want to know what I had to go through to get that fixed as this all happened on Dec 6th, once I got the keys and all exited tried to start the car than I got these fuel problems. By now I'm getting extremly tired of all these problems and only want to do one thing....to drive the darn car! Any help would very much appriciated!

The 2150cc cdi engine is prone to injectors going faulty. Symptoms are poor starting (it'll turn over forever and eventually start as if nothing was wrong), and big air bubbles in the fuel lines. I've had two injectors go on me - one gave me a hot start problem, and the other a cold start problem - both with the same symptoms. There's also a small cheap rubber washer on the high pressure rail which can fail giving similar symptoms. Have a diesel fuel injection specialist do an injector leak off test. Diagnosis, removal, repair and refit of one injector cost me about £200 the last time.
