My old C (1995 "N" C220 petrol) class has been diagnosed with an engine loom failure which has wiped out the ECU - and it needs new coil packs. Its out of the country these days and doesn't belong to me any more but I know the owner.

I've said no way, the loom issues don't affect the 202, the 4 pots or 1995 models. Am I wrong here?
I am also being told that used ECUs are dropping like flies and are rare and fought over.
Given that these issues don't seem to be coming up on here, is this baloney or am I missing something?
Thanks guys.

ill be interested in this as i have th 202 model and i hav seen on other sites that this is a big problem in america that they had to get it done and that its prone to ecu failure its a big problem on w 202s im just wating for mine to go i havent heard of it over here but it says on mercs over 10 years old it happens on w202s that is and it costs bigbucks so basically its only worth scrap as its so expensive to put right what ive heard from w202 owners

Looms retail at nearly £500 and MB dont sell many, ring em up and ask how much for the cable harness and how many sold in the last 12 months, not many.

More likely the coil packs failing and or MAF, failed coil packs tend to take out the maf dont know why but the two tend to go together.

this tallies with what I had heard. I'd heard that the 6cyl ones tend to suffer - hence all the issues in he US where the C280 was a base model, but here, where 6cyl 202s are rarer (most 2.0-2.3 4 pots) I haven't heard of it at all. Anyone seen a loom failure on a 4 pot 202?

I have never heard of a w202 loom failing but the cable quality is the same as the w124 which known to have a problem the dodgy cable quality will effect all cars of 1994-1995 vintage, after 1995 the quality of cabling changed for the better apparently.
If it is a common problem with 4 pot 202s in the U.S. it could be due to a general higher overall ambient temperature.

More likely where the cars made rather than temp, if a cars made in urop parts come from a supplier in urop, if made in mexico or ohio then parts possibly made localish to reduce shipping etc. So it could just be the quality of cable used etc. Just a thought and possibly completely WRONG.
