202 Wiper Arm not retracting

Evening all,

My 97 C250TD 202's windscreen wiper is not returning to park due to it not retracting. It will go to park if I push the wiper in towards the central mechanism.

I have had the arm jam a 1/4 of its way round its sweep 3 times in the last 2 years -each time I fixed this by unclipping the centre cover & giving the slide mechanism a good squoosh with spray grease.

This resolved the problem each time, but this last time I tried to pulling the arm out to get a bit more access under the covers, on testing it immediately started slapping the rubber edge of the screen & as stated above jamming 10cm higher than it should.

What pulls the arm in? -is it a spring within the arm or is it part of the mechanism? I currently have no time / light to research on my own!

I assume that a trip to my tame dealers is going to be required, what part do I need & how much? -at this point, I really really don’t want it to be the motor.

If your wiper is sweeping the screen it is not the motor but the drive head or linkage that is faulty. It could be the large nut on the back of the drive head has slackened allowing the mechanism to slip and go out of sychronisation, this is easily fixed once the unit is out of the car. Other than that you have a problem with the internal gear in the drive head ,a dealer will replace the unit if that is the case at a cost of about £400 I'm afraid.PM me.

So not just a simple spring then!

-not the best news, but its better to know.

I suspect that this was a problem when I bought the car, a final push for the previous owner. Maybe the final push for me...still can’t get better than 30 mpg!!
