2022 E63 Tyres

Hi all,

I have a 2022 E63S estate currently running Pirelli P Zeros: 265/35/ZR20Y at the front and 295/30/ZR20Y at the rear. c.5.5mm treat all round, c.2 years old, 4000 miles.

The font 'shudders' along at anything close to a quarter turn when cold/moving slowly, and even once warmed up it severely understeers out on the road. I don't have to try hard at all to get the car to understeer, which doesn't fill me with confidence!

Three questions to those much wiser than I:

1) Are those tyre sizes correct?
2) Was that year/model of E63 developed with P Zeros?
3) What alternative tyre would you recommend - I don't care about road noise or longevity, I just need the thing to stop understeering so badly!

It sounds to me like transmission wind-up. On many 4-matic cars, MB's solution was to fit all-season tyres, I believe, to stop crabbing & wheel-hop. Not ideal on a 63 though.

It's entirely possible that car was developed on Pirelli tyres and Pirelli do get harsh in the second half of their lifespan!

Thanks Rotorhead, it is a 4-matic system. Is there a recommended winter tyre for the E63S that will overcome the understeer during the colder months?

I managed to find my digital user manual recently buried in the car's settings, and that had recommended wheel and tyre sizes.

It was in the "Mercedes App" section, if you have a look in there, and search for "tyres" you should get all the info you need re: manufacturers recommendations.

Hi Joe,

As per Mark, or have a wee shufti in your handbook - it'll give you an idea in there, I suspect.

I'm not sure where you're based (I'm on my phone at the moment), but you may not need full winters, all-season should do it, hopefully!

Depending how long you've had the car, it may be worth giving your dealer a kick as I believe it is a recognised issue.

The main downside will be the loss of grip in warmer months, if you keep them on (versus the summer fitment), but it should at least be predictable. To be fair, I used Falken AS210 all-seasons in to warmer months on a previous car and they behaved fine unless I was really playing.

When I had my C63 (W204), I used Dunlop Wintersport 3D over the chilly months, made a good difference in traction.

1) Yes they are correct

2) No, Mercedes will put what ever tyre on it they get cheapest and meets the spec so usually Pirelli or Continental

3) Michelin PS4 or Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 6 are better tyres, the Pirelli are notorious for doing exactly what yours are

I'm likely to go for the PS4's, at £1400 fitted I'm hoping for no understeer!

There seems to be quite a few people remarking that this is expected from P Zeros.
Personally I've been using ContiSport 6 and ContiSport 7 without issue on my W216.
Prior to that I was a big Michelin fan, but they're nomenclature got a bit confusing with PS4 and PS4S etc.

I remember in my youth, all the adverts for Pirelli tyres, P6 or P7 etc, but being young all my cars were a few years old by the time I bought them and the tyres had been replaced by then with Uniroyals or Firestones etc. The same when watching F1, Bridgestone appeared to be the tyre you had to have if you wanted the best.
Fast forward to a time when you could afford to buy cars that were not 3 years old and although second hand still had the original tyres on them. I quickly found out that despite decades of motor sport advertising hoardings, Pirelli's were not as good as I'd always thought they were. Bridgestone Potenzas were an even bigger disappointment.
You cannot under estimate the power of advertising, and as a motorcyclist from the 70's, don't get me started on Japanese Dunlops!

For the purposes of assisting others I shall share my feedback, and apologies for the delay!! So I fitted Michelin PS4's all round and it was an immediate world of difference. No shuddering at low speeds, significantly better grip in all conditions experienced so far, lower road noise and I'd say better comfort but that is possibly psychological...! The down side is that it doesn't go sideways quite as easily and at £1320 I'm driving more gently - so actually slightly improved fuel economy as well - add that to the list!

PS4's or GY Asymmetric6' seem to be the choice of E63AMG owners.

I had P-Zero's on my remapped W212 E63 and the grip in colder weather was non existent.
Big change when I changed to GY's

Thanks for the info on the PS4's. My next car, a W213 E63 will be getting them too.

275/35/20 is the correct size (I know its a slightly old thread) also the MO1 tyres give better side wall protection than the normal ones.

PS4s are great. I fitted them to the SL63, about six months ago, and they transformed the car. Very pleased. PS5s were not available in my sizes, IIRC.
