I have heard mention that the EGR valve can be bypassed, or even removed, as it is apparently not beneficial to the engine?

Could anyone confirm info on this issue?

People who have had problems with EGR's on 300/320 diesels have removed, blocked or disconnected the vacuum pipe.

Would this be detrimental or beneficial?

All views appreciated.

Thanks

Not on your engine, although I have read a thread that suggested it was possible by modifying the MAF wiring. I would leave it alone.

Its certainly not beneficial to the engine, but its not something that I would worry too much about. It tends to gum the intake and associated bits up with oily muck but thats about it. I cleaned my EGR valve a few months ago because it was sticking, and it still does slightly, but mine has 178000 miles on it and is nearly 10 years old :)
