There is a lot of play in the steering box, I need another one.

Are there any 'adjustments' that can be made within the box to deal with the wear. (shims or the like)

Can I get a recon unit somewhere?

The dealer is asking over £800 for the part...about what the car cost me!

I think there is adjustment on them under the heat shield on the steering box. If not Try Euro car parts, i think they are about £200.

Good stuff. I'll have a look and let you know what I find.

Where are Euro car parts?

Hi there,

You can also adjust the steering box, however if you over do it you run the risk of blowing the seals.....(No penquin jokes please!)

There should be a large allen nut on the top of the box, if you slacken off the locking nut and then turn the allen nut anticlockwise it will remove some of the play in the box.

I took the heat shield off and had a quick look. I'll need to get a longer ring spanner as I can't get a socket onto the nut easily, due to the exhast manifold.

Euro cars have boxes for £230 if all else fails.

Why not the peguin jokes? The one in the ice cream cabinet is one of my personal favorites.

Could the steering damper be at fault?

The damper looks a bit oily, I'm going to check it out anyway.

There is a lot of play when I turn the steering wheel. I can actually turn the steering wheel from the steering box end. That is putting my hand down on to the joint and I can move the steering wheel from there, if you follow my drift!! (that's more subtle than the penguin joke me thinks)

Sorted.

I intially wound the allen bolt out, until it started to get tight...not a good idea, I could hardly turn the steering. I wound it a back a little and the steering was a lot better.

I also changed the damper and the steering is pretty good now.
