Problem started recently with W124 230E with 280k kms on the clock. Car has intermittent starting problems and loss of power while in drive mode. Had difficulty even going up a small hill!! Took it to the garage and they recommend replacing the Fuel Pump Relay. Mine was an older unit with nine pins and the new units have ten pins; garage advised its the same as the tenth pin is not used. Garage also recommend to replace fuel pump as it could be cause of problem. Total cost of replacements quite substantial!

The irony of it all is that car works fine when idle and stationary except probably for the ocassional "cough". Similarly no problems when revving while stationary. If its fuel pump, shouldn't it experience similar problems when in drive mode?

Please help!!

i would also check the overvolatge protection relay-also known as ovp relay.
there is a fuse on top of this relay which can blow if the car is jumpstarted incorrectly.
this has been covered many times before and search the archives for ovp relay and its location in the car
