230E Repair Nightmare

Owner of a Mercedes 230E of Chassis No: WDB124023 and Engine No: 102982 since 1992. The vehicle is now in workshop due to failure of one cylinder cause by faulty gasket. After opening up engine, workshop recommended change of all pistons as well (including rings etc etc) cos cylinder chambers are "worn out". Further added that in addition to skimming of cylinder head, the chambers have to be bored which means bigger pistons etc etc.

Can someone recommend suitable replacement piston parts? Difficult to locate parts as the 230E model only availabel in Asia.

It might not be worth doing such a major repair. Consider bodywork etc. After this repair would car be in mint condition. If not scrap it and buy one which is in mint condition.

Am I correct in assuming that you considered the car to have been running quite satisfactorily, without excessive oil consumption, etc. prior to the gasket failure, and that it is in 'normal' wear and tear condition for its age? If so then I would have them simply complete the gasket repair job, though this would entail having the head checked and skimmed if necessary.
Very few engines are re-bored these days, but if you do go ahead with that, where do you you stop? Timing chain/sprockets? A set of new valves, springs and hydraulic tappets? Camshaft/s? Crankshaft regrind? Oil pump? I could go on and on!
