should be set to N, for normal (95RON) unleaded.

a 230 will never run satisfactorily on 95 ron fuel - it's not designed to, check your handbook but I think you'll find it needs 97 ron.

Mine used to pink slightly on standard unleaded but ran like a dream on superplus.

if it still pinks on the higher octane unleaded then you need to start checking a few other things.

What's the timing belt condition like? is there any slack in that or the tensioner? Are the timing drive cogs worn? Is the mixture set correctly on the injection system? Have you cleaned the injectors? Is the MAF in need of replacement.

This is an almost endless list and y recomendation is that you drop the car into a knowledgable independent and let them diagnose the problem rather than working on a process of elimination and virtually rebuilding the whole car :)

Hi

If it my vehicle I would first try some good quality petrol in it. Not the cheap stuff from super markets. But the stuff which is premium which none of us wants to buy. Your car being a a kat car rather than RUF(RUF=Catalyst not fitted) will be the last of the 102's which run a lot cleaner. If the vehicle still pinks then get the timing checked. (although if its out it means a new ecu as it is controled by it).The coded plug only moves the timing by a few degrees & if memory servs its sealed. Not that will stop you if you really want to play. If the fuel cures the problem then the engine is probably coked up. Requiring a decoke. Or use better fuel. But you can adjust the trimming plug. As mb have put a setting for countries with low octane fuels. If you suspect that the engine is coked up. Then answer this question. Does it use a lot of oil. More so on a run. If this is the case the valve guide seals have gone hard & allow the oil to pass into the cylinder. Thereby coking up the valves.

Either way its food for thought
