I've just bought a 230TE estate in as seen condition, I only paid £200 for a 1990 model, everything works but when I remove the oil filler with the engine running the engine appears to be pressurised, so I assume its either bore wear or valve guides, is this normal for 170,000 miles, and is it worth repairing? I dont know how much oil the engine is burning because I'm still tidying the car up and so haven't driven it more than 50 miles.

Any advice would be appreciated

Welcome to the forum.

Basic checks, let the engine idle a couple of mins, then rev it up,if smokes its valves.

If it smokes every time you rev it its bores/ rings.

Are there any water bubbles on the dip stick or oil filler cap.

Hi mate,

I wouldn't worry too much about it if the engine runs ok and doesn't use too much oil.

A rule of thumb I've heard is to undo the oil filler cap but leave it over the opening, if it just chatters about then don't worry; but if it gets blown off (grow up....:)) by the blowby then do worry.

For £200 just put a can of oil in the boot & enjoy the drive!

Thanks for that maybe I was looking for problems, I think the idea of enjoying the car for a while, and then perhaps moving up market may be the answer, and if I need a can of oil in the back so what?

No sign of anything un toward in the oil, although it does smell a bit petrolly, although it may improve with an oil change this weekend, should I stick with 5-30 oil or go for a 10-40 or even 20-50?

10/40 suits mine.

But my head gasket has been blown for 5000 miles although you would never know from the drivers seat.

I think it needs a good long burn! Get in it and drive it ASAP!

Ran an old 77 200D once, 200 miles/week, averaged 33mpg, 1 pint of oil/week and 1 pint of water(cracked head), retired her a good few years ago but never bothered me and never let me down in 6yrs of this.
Dont get too bothered, where would 200 quid get you in a modern car of any make?
Good Luck
