hi folks, hope you can help me. i have bought my first mercedes, a 1989 230te (i have had it for about 6 weeks, it is a nice car but it has all started to go wrong)

no power over 4000rpm, cannot overtake or get over about 70mph. service it, check the leads etc.. had it on the krpton tuner but to no avail. any ideas???

fuses, i do not have a copy of the owners handbook & need to know what the fuse numbers guide is. i have contacted my dealer and they no longer produce one for this model, can anyone photocopy this for me, i will cover all costs etc... or post the numbers on this site.

electric windows- drivers side window does not work, i have checked the switch & this is fine, the motor clicks but window still does not move. is this the motor?

ignition barrel- sticking suddenly, key goes in but will not turn without considerable time and effort jiggling it, all the dashboard lights have gone at what appeared to be the same time, could this be related.
is it relatively simple to change the ignition barrel??

hope you lot out there can help me, i like my mercedes, but i want to enjoy driving it rather than seeing it in the garage every week!!

Hi

1. I would let a specialist look at the engine hesitation.

2. Sounds like the window motor requires replacment.

3. Replace the ignition barrel at the EARLIEST opportunity. Otherwise its about to breakdown on you!!!

Is it an easy job. Yes if you have the tools. With out the exact size piece of steel, the barrel & cover will not move.

4. If you find the ignition lights don't come on with the replacment of the barrel. Then check the alternator regulator for wear.

Good luck

Regards

Your Mercedes

just to add to what Andy says

The owners handbook is still available - your dealer is lying to you because they can't be bothered to look it up on the computer

part number

124 584 42 83 Order No. 6550 5965 02

Costs less than a fiver.

Hi Weebull and a belated welcome to the forum.

Do not despair the 230 TE is a fine car and I am sure you will get your problems resolved, but you will need to spend some money (wisely).

1. Priority, if you can get the ignition key to position I - leave it there and do not remove the key (lock the car with the other key), this is crucial and will save you a shedful of money. Go to the dealership armed with your registration documentation, proof of address, driving licence, passport, DNA sample, retinal scan (last 2 are jokes!) and order a repacement barrel for your vehicle (cost around £50). As long as you leave the key in position I - a good indy will be able to replace the barrel within 15 minutes (you could even do it yourself). My indy put in a spare barrel while I was waiting for the replacement and then fitted the replacement for free as a goodwill gesture. Believe me if you do not do this you are talking lots of money in in labour charges.

2. While you are waiting for the handbook, the fuse box should have a paper insert in the lid that describes fuse numbering and services. It is worth replacing all the fuses with new ones as by now they will be old and tired. If you are too tight to spend a few quid here take them out in turn and clean them up with a little glasspaper before testing and refitting them.

3. Your profile does not give an indication of your location (perhaps you could amend it) but if practical - you could consider taking your motor to Andy Gayle (Birmingham) or George Fraser (London) both are well regarded by users of this forum. There is nothing more expensive and frustrating in spending hundreds of pounds on components that are not defective and nothing more valuable in having someone experienced in the marque who has good understanding and diagnostic ability (and tooling) to survey, service and repair your vehicle. In these early days of ownership either of the above Indys will do the business for you and give you confidence in the true state of your vehicle.

Good luck, enjoy your car!

thanks, but.....

thanks for the advice folks, but it was not a great day in the life of a mercedes driver , got your postings tonight after spending most of the evening trying to get the key working, yes the barrel is shot!!! the a.a. guy could not sort it out either. it is completely goosed now. :( gutted as i had made the extraction tool today as shown in the haynes manual & ordered my replacement barrel from mercedes, at a cost less than the scrap yards were asking (dealers with scruples???) :D
unfortunately i live in the sticks (cumbria) & my nearest dealer is an hour away, i was due to collect it tomorrow. the car is now parked up but the local a.a. man has offerered to tow it to the dealer for me free of charge :D, in the hope that mercedes will just be able "to whip it out" & "may have a tool for it". is this a pipe dream or is it likely to cost me a shed load in quality labour when i would be better of with a butcher? is it worth drilling it out myself (never done this before, buthave seen done it in the movies  )
while i am there i will ask about the handbook (again)

the car was also due in tomorrow to have the metering head replaced to try & sort out the lack of power problem! impecable timing

thanks again, it is sites like this ( & driving the car when it is working,) that make it all worth while.

regards
