230TE Tailgate Lock. W124

Some thoery needed please...
My key won't turn the tailgate lock.
It is the proper key, opening all locks on the vehicle other than the tailgate.
I have had the lock removed to check but the impression given is that the key is wrong rather than the lock being siezed. (I am convinced the key is correct).
Central locking all works fine.
Is it worth getting a new key cut?
I suppose the lock could have been changed at some time.
Has anybody an idea of price/availability?

Remove the lock and soak it overnight in a tin of penetrating oil ..it is probably corroded and full of gunge ..then again someone may have changed the tailgate or lock or both and decided it would never be used ( the key) ..it happens

Forgive me if this seems obvious, but are you sure it's the main key?

Check if the key will lock/unlock the glove compartment. The service key will open the doors and operate the ignition, but not the glove compartment or tailgate. Not much point keeping the tailgate locked really, but that's how it works on mine.
