I have a 1993 250D wich runs as smooth as silk but has developed a problem with engine oil leaking into the water. 193,000miles. There is a fair bit of oill but no excessive pressure. I suspect it is the head gasket leaking between the oil and water ways but would welcome any other suggestions before I take it apart.

Hello and welcome, there are additives that can work like K seal and a few others, if it is not high pressure you stand a good chance of fixing and worth a try

Heads tend not to go on these engines. Somebody else had a recent post with a similar problem, but I can't remember what it was, a good search should find it though.

Could it be a damaged radiator / oil cooler?

Does it have a 603 engine or a 606?

If it's a pre-facelift car (big grille, no air vent on the o/s/f wing) then it may be a CHG failure

If it's a post-facelift car with a 606 engine there's a water / oil heat exchanger in the side of the sump. These can corrode through if there's not enough antifreeze in the system. I'd check this before worrying about the CHG

Hello. Thanks for the response. I'm heading towards a new radiator/oil cooler as it is the only other place where the water and oil can mix via a leak. I'v had a few head gaskets gone in my time (fifty years of fiddling) and this is nothing like them. Many thanks.

That means that you will soon be as old as me :-?

You haven't said which engine your car has. It would be useful

AFAIK there is no engine oil cooler in the radiator. There is a gearbox oil cooler built into the radiator. If you are getting engine oil mixing with water then it has a failed CHG (603) or likely a failed heat exchanger (606)

To my knowledge there is no heat exchanger on a 603 but I don't know them as well as the 606
