There's a big fat pipe (around 10cm diameter) that goes from side to side across the top of the engine in my 1998 250TD. It's made of plastic and seems to be something to do with the fuel system - possibly some kind of venting system. There are various connections which are held together with jubilee clips. Yesterday the engine went completely gutless, and when I lifted the bonnet, I notice that one of the jubilee clips was missing, the pipe was disconnected, and was blowing black oil/diesel (which was dripping on the exhaust). You can't buy 10cm jubilee clips in Bath on a bank holiday weekend, so I secured the joint with a couple of cable ties. As soon as I drove off, the joint blew apart again. I've used cable ties instead of jubilee clips before and they usually work OK. It's fairly hot where I used the cable ties, which may have softened them, but I was surprised that they didn't hold at all.

Questions: Does anyone know what this pipe does? Is it pressurized which is blowing the joint apart? Is this likely to happen again when I put a proper jubilee clip on? Should I just take it to my local dealer and give him a blank cheque?

All suggestions gratefully received

That pipe is the charge pipe, the pipe that carries the pressurised air from the turbo, through the intercooler under the radiator and then to the inlet manifold. You are right, there is a fair bit of pressure in that pipe that will blow it apart at a weak joint.

Not a good idea to run it without the pipe connected, the engine will be down on power, like a naturally aspirated engine and the engine will be sucking in unfiltered air.

This used to happen a lot on Range Rover TD's, you could tell by the sudden increase in noise and lack of power.

Ignore that, total load of B@#$sh1t.

If the intercooler were full of oil, it would be blown all over the engine bay now as the pipe that has come loose is after the intercooler.

It is normal to have a little oil inside the inlet pipes on these motors because of the breather.

If you wish to give advice, give good advice or none at all.

Thanks for the very useful answer to my query about the 250TD problem. Knowing what the problem was certainly helped when I took the car back to the garage which had misfitted the jubilee clip in the first place. All is now back in place, and the car is well again.
