280 sl smokin.

hi all, new to this forum. i have a 280sl 1986. sent to george fraser for service this week, i've used him for my mercs for years...so he did all the little bits but left the main issue due to the cost of repair. car drives perfectly save for letting out huge plumes of grey smoke on deceleration from high speed.and using lots of oil/water.there is no oil in the water and no water in the oil. now i trust george but he has told me the problem is it needs a new head gasket and this will cost circa 2k...does this sound right? i remember me and my brother replacing said item on an old datsun ourselves? would be grateful for any advice. george tells me its a pig of a job. :-(

I would say its about £750-1K max. You'll need a full top end build, new valve seals etc. Before you start that i would have a compression check done to make sure the bottom end is ok. £2k will rebuild the entire engine.
