Hope you can give me some advice...I bought my C reg W123 after reading through this message board, very helpful.  The problem with the car is that when I back off the power on a normal run e.g. going back to cruising after overtaking on the motorway, there is a constant (quite loud) whirring from the engine.  This only happens in drive - I've never experienced the noise whilst in park/neutral...any ideas?

Wilf.

Have another listen, are you sure the noise is coming from the engine?

From what you describe, it sounds more like the back axle whining. Have you checked the oil level?

Not 100% sure where the noise comes from, I guess it can be deceptive.  Thanks for the info - I'll let you know how I got on.  Anything I need to be wary of when checking the oil?

Not really, just make sure it is full up!

Thw whine can also be caused by general wear and tear on high mileage cars...i get a bit of whine when coasting in my 190...its only very quiet though.

Finally got around to checking the diff oil - unscrewed the filler plug and oil began to dribble out, I presume there is plenty in there.  Maybe the oil has degraded?  If this is not likely are there any more suggestions?  Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for the info Andy.  This sounds like it is getting out of my league, maybe a visit to your garage is due sooner rather than later.
