Yet again another clk 320 I’ve owned doing the same problem! After doing a kick down this one also refuses to Rev and goes down to tick over with no throttle response. Pull over, switch off and restart and away you go again. Really confusing as this happened with my last one (both 2004 models). I always drive her sensibly to avoid this happening but today gave her a quick 10 second booting just for a clear out but it happened again. Their must be an answer somewhere out there? She is serviced including fuel filter. Confused like f##k!!!

Petrol or diesel?
If the latter then there will likely be a boost leak or an O2 sensor giving false reading and sending the car into limp mode, it will do that without setting off the eml but it will store a code
I had exactly what you had in an E270 years ago, it was a duff sensor sending out of range values on hard throttle, but in range all other times hence no eml and only ever a stored code for boost pressure too high

Could catalytic converter be partially blocked ? , will it do it if you rev it high in neutral for ten or more seconds and then try to drive ?

Thanks so far. It is a petrol model. It has new cats on it as the previous owner left nothing to chance and replaced any problem with new. I’m happy driving her around sensibly especially as summer is around the corner and once the roof is down it’s nice just to cruise…. But now and then it’s nice to boot it!!

We had a very similar problem with our 320.
Switch it off and away it went again, it drove fine, but kickdown the gears would send it into safe mode. Wouldn't give any dash warning lights.
If we kept the revs under 3500 it was good, above that it would go into safe mode.
The scan show up as faulty air flow meter.
Over £400 from Mercedes, aftermarket £108.
Fitted the aftermarket one and had no more issues.

I mean, read the codes first, but it's my guess

Throttle pedal sensor!
I remember taking one apart on a friends CLK320 and giving it a clean as he had occasions where it would go into limp mode. I tried my hardest to replicate the fault and had the car a couple of weeks as a daily driver with no problems until having hoofed it away from set of lights, it went to tickover and I had to switch off and restart in the middle of a major A30 junction. I cannot say for sure if cleaning cured the fault as he moved and we lost touch.

You would be surprised at the number of drivers that do not use 100% throttle.
