Basically its a software program and sets of cabling which allow you to read data out of your cars computers and diagnose and configure its components. Car-Soft has an in-built database of known faults and procedures you need to take to rectify them, helping you to fix your own car or at least know or have an idea of what is going wrong. There are other systems out there, most noticeably Mercedes own Star-Diagnosis, but it is prohibitively expensive.

There are 'copies' of the hardware on Ebay and you can get hacked versions of the earlier software, but its only really useable with older cars, and better off anyway to have the legitimate thing.

China seem to be making a lot these days, including Star Diagnostic copies! If you can see an X431 working, its the best advertisement and probably get a discount.

I bought a second hand carsoft package as seen in the link £400, works very well and it came with the laptop, I would like to upgrade to version 8 I think it was or pro as they call it now but the upgrade price was expensive.

It s agood tool and it paid for itself very quickly. The china made stuff doesnt work because all the l-lines are not attached so only one system can be tested.
