I have two M104 engines both 1995, one is a 2.8 and one is a 3.2.
I’m looking at up-rating to 3.6 spec.

I’ve been trawling through the parts listing on the internet from different sources and as far as I can see all of the top end and the fuel system is identical for all 3 engines.

E.g. All of the following part numbers for all 3 engines are the same.

Camshafts (both)
Inlet and exhaust valves
Fuel injectors
Fuel pressure regulator
Fuel pump (although there was a change to twin pumps on some models)
Throttle body (actuator)

Can anyone correct me if they know for a fact that this is wrong?

Obviously there is a capacity increase.

From what I’ve read on the internet:

The 3.6 engine starts as a 2.8 and is oversized to 3.6 (with 3.5 diesel crank)
It uses the 3.2 inlet manifold (I can’t confirm yet that this is different to the 2.8)

Things I know for fact also are:

There is also has a better exhaust system, extra inlet pipe to the airbox, (same box though) and a bigger cross section inlet pipe across the top of the engine.

I’m sure the ECU will have different settings for fuelling e.t.c. but can anyone enlighten me on any other differences.

Your Mercedes
2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
You are asking a hard one here, there are two ways to increase the CC, one with the bore, and the other with the throw.
I suggest that you look at all of the parts here for all 3, write down the numbers from all 3 and compare them.

Just find three cars that use the 3 engines.
