If I leave my 1989 300 CE-24 standing for longer than a week, it develops a misfiring problem. This occurs after the engine has reached normal running temperature, and seems to be related to some sort of condensation in the distributor: if I remove the distributor head and wipe the inside of the cover and the points clean, the engine fires normally. Is this a known problem, and is there a fix?

Yes this is a known problem, it is caused by vapour from the sump, what oil are you using. wiping the cap with a silicon or teflon spray helps a lot. if you search the forum you will find threads relating to this.

If you can find LPS-1 it works even better, but I haven't seen it for a couple of years. I remember a demo where a mains elctric drill was sprayed with the stuff, then switched on and held underwater in a fish-tank!

Wouldn't wanna do THAT with WD-40!

Thanks Malcolm. I don't know what oil is in the car at present. Is there a particular one you'd recommend?

There is a section on oils under "engines" . Oils are not my line, but I always a well known brand of synthetic.firms like Cosco, etc often have good prices, ie 5 liters for £13.50

you could do a search on the forum as much has been written on the subject.

Thanks Paul – I've tracked down a supplier of LPS-1 using Google
