Hi, My 300 Sl is running quite hot, at times approaching the red line, where should the needle be on the temp gauge. I have changed the thermostat and the housing which seems to have helped a bit, would the viscous fan be on the way out, or would an electric fan be the answer. Thanks.

Its better for the engine to run hot, the viscous fan should cut in at 85c and an electric fan cuts in at 100c. I have seen here there is a carrot test, if the fan will slice a carrot its ok.

Hi Thanks for your help, the fan spins spins as soon as the engine is started, it does stop if you apply a rag without too much pressure to the outside edge with the intention to stop it spinning, i will try the carrot test, but should the fan start spinning from the outset or when a certain temp is reached, Thanks Tony

Yes the fan does turn as soon as engine started, its only going round with no real cooling effect, wait till the engine is up to at least 90c before you try.
