As you can probably tell with the amount of new postings I'm new to all this! And whilst doing research into getting a lovely 300 sl, I was wondering about loss of power over the years, and ease of a tune up?

I have the same engine in our 300 TE

it really is quite easy to work on, and seems reasonably robust. The fuel injection is good and old fashioned, so while not very economical, it can me repaired and fixed without too much aggro if it goes funny. The plugs are a piece of cake, I'v never had an easier format to change. The distributor cap can be a pig to get off, it's held on by 3 allen head bolts and the bottom one is obscured, covered in filth, and done by feel only.
As long as the engine isn't spewing oil and belching smoke, it's probably ok. Dead easy to do a compression check, and a test drive should have it pulling like a train in every gear.
Search here on 300 SL or 300 and see what comes up.
