I have just inherited a 1991 W124 300 TE 24 Auto Estate which has a twin turbo turbo technices conversion. I am wondering if anyone else has come across such a car as I understand it was a standard conversion Turbo Technics did back at the time. This car has 191k miles but the engine was rebuilt 60k miles ago after being flooded! Does anyone know how much life expectancy of gearbox / drivetrain etc is shortened by the conversion. I am looking to hang on to her for a bit as she goes like a train :)

Also anyone know the best way to go about replacing the front arches which are suffering from a fair deal of rust?

Many thanks

hopefully not with seawater ;-)

as to the arches, simply replace the front wings and have them painted. they're bolt-on/off jobs, and the main expense will be the painting.

regards the turbo conversion: these engines were built to withstand fairly high degrees of torque, and a properly serviced turbo conversion should present no problem.

if i didn't repeat 'properly serviced' in the last sentence, then ...

No ditchwater I believe!!

would you bother with so called "pattern" front wings (Euro car parts have them for about £30 a side) or would you go for genuine items which are obviously a lot more expensive?

Cheers

if it were me, yes - i would probably buy pattern wings. if the item under discussion were something critical - a head gasket, say - i would buy from the stealership.

I've got a 12V Turbo Technics 300E with 169,000 miles on the clock.

The previous owner to me serviced this car within an inch of its life and apart from having a new head gasket and a head rebuild......as the head was off it seemed to make sense, this car has never needed any work doing to it engine wise.

It had a replacement tranny at 110,000 and new Turbos at 120,000.

Hughes of Beaconsfield who did the original conversions still have a stack of spares for these conversions.

My car has benefited from regular oil changes, ie every 3000 miles and you need to change the plugs every 6000 miles....they run best on a specific NGK plug and not the usual Bosch items.

Car goes like stink and does not use a drop of oil........a great great car, but sadly for sale.

Regarding the wings...the pattern wings are OK...can be a bit fiddly to fit and the gaps between the edge of the wing and the door are not as good as the MB replacement wings

I should also have mentioned that the other thing that surprised me about my car is the fuel consumption.....not bad considering its got 310bhp....on a motorway run I get late 20's and that's at speeds of 80-90 with occasional bursts of acceleration
