Hi all

Please bear with me with the daft questions-I am very new to the car!
When I start the 300 TE, the first attempt catches and stalls every time. It then always starts on the second try. I am following the handbook procedure (i.e. no throttle)

Is this normal, and if not, what are the possible causes? I have been spoiled by my old Rover 827 which started first turn of the key every time......

First things first check the condition of the dizzy cap and rotor arm, check the plugs whilst your at it too.

Our 2.6 190 had this problem, new dizzy cap sorted it.

will do jib-thanks. The cap looks recent, but for what they cost, I dont think it would hurt to change it!

Yep-it was the dizzy cap-in a right old state. Replaced and now starting fine. Isnt that bottom retaining bolt a pig though....?

Hmm....I was hoping that this was sorted, but no, despite the new plugs, cap and rotor. Symptoms-cold start, catches and stalls immediately on first attempt but fires up fine on second try. The only way to get it to fire first time is to hold the key over in the "start" position for longer-so that the starter continues to turn as it is trying to fire-then it is fine.
I know it isnt a major problem, but it IS annoying. Any further ideas?

Mine does this intermittently when it has been sat for a couple of days. On the basis that it could be any part of a fairly complex fueling system I just live with it as it always fires up instantly second time.

Its almost as if the cold start devices are not holding on when the key is released

Is this fault still a high voltage problem,,when the key is turned the ballast resistor is shorted out putting the full 12 v across the 8v coil

see my post today regarding use of non-orig dizzy (never again), albeit my prob was slightly different to yours. Suggest you check inside for condensation after a couple of damp nights outside. gdluck

The answer here was as you say the cap,, when the starter is engaged the spark has a 30% boost, over riding any short comings in the cap, once the starter is released then the cap got the better of it, in the normal mode
