300 turbo diesel fuel consumption

Recently purchased (in the states) 1999 300 E turbo diesel. Was told it should get 34 miles per gallon. Seems to be getting only about 26 miles per gallon. Anyone have any experience with this model and what sort of mileage I should be getting (preferable in gallons)

Hi

Change the air filter and do an oil change and put fully synthetic oil in and you should get 30-33mpg and up tp 37 if gentle.

Also check tyre pressures

My 98 E300TD 180Kmiles gets 33-37 on an 83 mile run trip commute.

Thanks for confirming your mileage for comparison. My car received new synthetic oil change just prior to purchase, not sure about air filter though. Will check that and tire pressure and see if that helps. THANKS.

You can expect about 28mpg around town on long run ie motorway it will return 35--38mpg not a lot more .change filter as 230k recomended....
