Car has now had new engine mounts and the Crank Shaft Position Sensor, AT LAST, has been changed.

So, what's changed?

Very little, really.

Idle smooth as silk, as always.

It still stalls 90% of the time when shifted into neutral at, say 50 MPH.

"The 'box changes from 3rd to 5th with only the mearest hint of 4th gear!"

Refuses to select 4th when lever moved to 4 position - remains in 5th.

It does change into 4th under certain conditions so I know 4th works but invariably it changes up to 5th far too early, even if it's getting a thrashing.

Also, moving to 3rd manually takes several seconds.

Auto-change down to 3rd is also dead slow if the accelerator pedal is pressed down.

All-in-all, driving has become much less spirited than before and fuel consumtion is up a bit too.

Could these things be related?

I shall not be beaten!! I hope.

Many thanks

Hello Sir,

Thank you very much.

I fear we're not in the area of fine tuning here. We've got a major change from 'normal' 5-gear operation to this wierd 'avoidance' of 4th.

4th still works but it only stays there for half a second unless you're thrashing things - difficult on the rural roads here.

I'll try to be more succint later - other calls on my time.

Many thanks again, Telly, you're definitely 'on of the lads'!!!

Vacuum pipes - checking

Malcolm,

I have checked 'up top' and garage claim they've checked down below. I didn't have a chance to look underneath myself so I have to take their word for it.

They managed to replace the CPS (Crank) whilst doing engine mounts but I never thought that was related to 'box. I had hoped that stalling might have changed but it has't - almost always stalls when shifted to neutral from drive.

I'm reluctant to go to local MB as they've been pretty hopeless on certain issues. I'll be in UK (Liverpool, S Coast and Kent) early Feb so might try to find specialist who'd care to take a look. Any 'box experts out there?

Whilst the box has doubtless seen better days, I don't think this is terminal - naturally, I'd like to avoid 'box replacement costs too!!

I'll keep at it and report any changes etc.

Many thanks again.

it might be worth checking the pressure control cable adjustment it should have slight play when the throttle is closed

Been for another test drive ...

Yes, I'll check that but I'm pretty sure that was OK from last weekend's efforts.

Just returned from drive:

1. Stopped and selected neutral - didn't stall but surged several times before returning to smooth idle.

2. Stalled on arrival home after stopping, applying hand brake, removing foot from foot brake and selecting park.

Again these symptoms are typical and I had hoped that the new CPS might have done something.

I have slight impression that engine start is more 'prompt' with new CPS although it was never bad before, aside from in very hot weather in the bad old days.

Still have 4th gear reluctance, of course.

Oh well, I suppose I'll keep at it!

No MAF here

Hi Roofless,

No MAF here, we're on Bosch KE mech/electronic system.

Did another test and tried kick-down - shot of in 2nd (I think), 7000 rpm, engine sweet as a nut and ever so slightly aggressive - great.

Gearbox totally unable to make a decision - change or not change. I think it was 'hunting' between 2nd and 3rd and, unable to make up its mind. Finally eased of and it went to 5th again.

It's had this 'hunting' thing for ages but it used to be between 4th and 5th at towards 100mph.

Beginning to think about new box ££££ Agghhhh.
