300CE wobbly steering

Hi Guys,

My '89 300CE has got rather vague steering. I know it's a big old bus, but even so....

I've traced it to what I assume is the steering box (sorry, only used to rusty odl British cars and motorbikes!) - there is a certain amount of free play evident in the arm on the splined shaft. Presumably this is due to wear in the steering box?? All the other steering joints are ok, no play anywhere else.

I'd appreciate any advice on whether I can adjust this, or whether it should be replaced. Tips on replacement very much appreciated also!

I would have a look at your Idler Arm Bush as this could show similar characteristics.

One thing i have found is that with the front wheels off the ground, and an assistant turning the wheel one way and the other, there is a definite dead spot in the steering - the arm on the splined shaft coming out of the steering box doesn't move initially when the steering wheel is turned.

Its kind of difficult to see from above but if you go to the nearside of the car and look down past the engine near the wheel arch, you can just about see it. You should be able to make out a vertically pointing saft with a big nut on the end. Again, the symptoms still sound likely. The parts not cheap however at around £75 exc VAT so make best to get it checked first to make sure.
