All the letters/numbers in the auto shift box are illuminated once you turn at least the sidelights on. How you get to the bulb is another question. I think it involves removal of the centre console by unclipping the gearchange selector surround and then removing the screw from the rear of the console cover. The cover is then released by lifting the rear and releasing the front console locating pegs.

Let us know how you get on.

Boblez - it's dead easy. At the front of the gear selector just under the main block, there is a small wire with a push in fitting and a bulb on the end. Tease this out and hey presto - you can change the bulb. They are the same type as the heater bulbs and cost about 80p [uk]. Every merc I ahve had needed one of these, although one car was just a bad wire.

Ok..but should the light be brighter when you put on a gear. I had s320 few years ago and i think it worked that way.
Do you know anythink about it?
