Would the transmission from a 280e work in a 300d non turbo both 4 speed w124 300d is 1988 280e is 1994

Fundamentally everything can be made to work it may well need some fettling.
Best bet is make sure the gear box numbers are the same.

There are three things to consider when changing a gearbox (aside from physical characteristics).
1. Torque rating.
2. Ratios.
3. Shift points.

A petrol auto box will change up later than a diesel and may well have different spaced ratios. A diesel box will likely have a higher torque limit too.

As above always best to get the proper match.
