Some members were asking for 300e and 300ce engine figures.

300E & 300CE (MB FIGURES):

NON CAT: 138Kw at 5700/min = 185BHP (metric bhp (PS) 188)
With CAT: 132Kw at 5700/min = 177BHP (metric bhp (PS) 179)

NON CAT: 260Nm at 4400/min = 193 LB/ft torque
With CAT: 255Nm at 4400/min = 188 LB/ft torque

The above figures are rounded to nearest whole number.

The reason that some members quote different figures is that some are bhp and others PS hp (which is 1.39% more).

What year was the Cat standard. I cannot remember.

I suppose you guessed I cannot spell caty..... Cannot pronounce it either.

It also seems the horses in the uk were stronger than the rest of Europe.

So the non cat can pull 188 European horses but only 185 British horses

Birkenhead.
He's all tourque.

Thanks for info Pascal.

Brings home my comments about diesels; 3 litre petrol 188 Ft Lb at 4400rpm, 4 litre diesel 420 Ft lb BETWEEN 1900-2600 rpm.

Where exactly is the problem? there's NO contest here; twice the torque at half the revs ? I want one..

Like for Like

With respect LNM,

You are comparing the largest MB diesel (4.0L not even available in RHD) made with a petrol engine discontinued some 12 years ago.

The figures become much different when you compare like for like.

IE two new 6-cylinders (petrol just £2,170 more expensive)

New S320 Diesel LWB £52,940.......204 bhp..........368 Lb/ft at 1800rpm

New S350 Petrol LWB £55,130.......245 bhp..........306 Lb/ft at 3000-4500rpm

No, LNM don't.:)
Your points are very valid. Us petrolheads could be a dying race.

It pretty obvious that MB down rate (or alter rating when fitted to certain models) all their engines. Whether this is for emissions, realibility, or to establish sizeable differences in power between different models in a range i'm not sure, but suspect it's all three.
But we don't want division in this forum between diesel & petrol.:)

you are quite right...we dont want divisions between those who know cars and those who insist on filling up with diesel.

we will be able to convert them to proper cars with enough nice people agreeing with them while we are laughing as we drive home in our nice quiet cars.

Now now Joe. Behave.:)

Must Remember jet engines are closer relations to diesel than petrol. Fuel almost the same too.

But then again a Spitfire or Hurricane sounds much better than a Tornado or Harrier. But neither of the former would be much good for a dogfight against the jet propelled ones.

That's progress Joe. Practicality over astetics. I'm sure in 20 years time this will be even truer.

It's sad but true. The suck, squeze, bang & puff, may well be replaced by some hybred electric thingy.

i wont mind if they change to fuel cell as its clean but you will kss the enige sound.....but at least i can go straigh from petrol to cryogenic or electric without clattering agirculural marine engines.

and should the unthinkable ever happen and a jet fighter gets invloved in a close combat dogfight with a spit of hurricane i have to say that the prop jobs will win. why? they are massivly more manouverable at the low speed.....however with todays BVRAAM's i should expect the spit will be blown out of the sky from 50miles away......i agree that jet a1 and diesel is extremely similar..but they dont sound the same do they..imagine a deisel engine fighter over heard......the ememy would die laughing....come to think if it i have inadvertantly come up with a new humane weapons system?

still, as i have said a few times...the choice isnt ours yet! and when it happens we can choose to buy petrol......and encourage others to do the same.....but there will always be some who think the opposite.....give them the choice is what i say.....and damn the expense.
