I take it it's an auto? If so to remove the gear shift you have to remove the centre console panel that holds the electric window switches and the plastic cover panel that forms the shift 'gate' and gear selection indicator to access the nut at the base of the gear shift.
To remove the centre consle panel carefully remove the plastic trim around the shift aperture and at the seat end of the panel there is a screw hidden under the carpet infill of the centre console well. Remove this screw and carefully lift off the panel. Take care as the switches plug into a socket beneath.
At the base of the shift is the gear selection indicator panel ( the bit with the shift 'gate' and 2,3,D,N,R,P window) This is clipped to the large black plastic box that surrounds the base of the shift and which is normally hidden by the centre console panel. Carefully unclip the lid at the rear, front and sides, using a lrge flat bladed screwdriver) and lift it off and this will allow you to get to the locknut at the base of the shift. Loosen this nut and this will allow you to unscrew the shift (with the lid surrounding it)
Reverse the procedure to refit. Hope this helps and is reasonably clear.
