Can anyone tell me why my 1988 300SE makes a loud clang when changing from 'drive' to 'reverse' or vice-versa. If I let the engine revs die to a tick-over between the changes, all is well.
I would be very gratefull for a reply.
Many thanks,

Hi Mark.

You need to get underneath & check the drive line. Check propshaft couplings & for excess free play in the axle. If all this is ok. The it maybe in the box its self. But first check the easiest things on the prop & axle. If you don't know get a proffesional to check it for you. It could save you money in the long run.

In addition to what Andy's said, you want to ensure that you don't have a high idle issue. Idle speed on the L6 103 should be approx. 900rpm on cold start and 650-750 rpm at operating temp.

The gearbox is designed to engage at the above idle speeds - if your idle speed is high, i.e. 1000+ rpm at all times, then that needs to be addressed as that will only make the clunking/harshness worse.
