I have had a Thatcham 1 Alarm & Mobiliser fitted to my 1986 300SL.

The alarm is working fine but the fitter cannot seem to get the remote central locking working. He says it's because the motor is a vacuum motor rather than electric.

I'va paid up but want to get it sorted rather than using the key. Does anyone have any ideas or solution so I can get the gut to finish the job off?

Thanks

Remote Alarm

Your mechanic is long due for a cranckcase service and brain-ignition timing, he's seriously "pinking".

The alarm system needs a motor actuator which some alarms don't include (see pick). This actuator costs about £10 and it is fixed to the rod of the master vacuum switch on the drivers door (for vacuum central locking vehicles) and then connected to the alarm wiring that actuates the central locking (you will have several wires redundant as you only need to connect to one door). The drivers door master switch controls the other doors, boot and petrol cap flap, so when the remote is triggered the actuator motor pushes the master switch on the driver's door and this locks and opens the other doors.

(the picture upload don't seem to be working on the forum, but if you PM me with your email address I will send you some pictures of the actuator)

Using an actuator is a fast way out of this problem but not the correct way to do it. The correct way to do it is to find the wire out of the driver's door that sends the key signal to the vaccum pump. Turn the key one way and it will send a negative signal. Turn the key the other way and it will send a positive signal on that same wire.

The installer must finder that wire at the kick panel and interupt the wire then shoot it's own signal to the pump via 2 relays.
