I have a 1998 300TD which i previously posted had a rattle which i put down to engine mounts as they are a weak spot. I had the mounts changed and also the worn linkage arm bushes.
The new exhaust was replaced under warranty and it still has a noisy rattle which sounds as though there is a hole through the firewall as it is coming into the cabin.
Outside it sounds a bit trucklike!
I would say there is part of the drivetrain knocking on the body but my mechanic has had it on the lift and cant find this problem.
When in gear (auto) it rattles but stops momentarily if you move into neutral.
Any ideas please??

#Thanks

There was another thread like this before and the cause was an exhaust mounting that was worn. The engine vibration pattern changes when you go from drive to neutral and also the engine angle changes slightly. This can be enough to make the exhaust come in contact with the body or some other parts. Its an easy fix but a common one. You did not mention if the rattle is up front or rear but it is more likely exhaust related as the entire drive train is not in motion or moving when stationery.

Olaf, sorry i have been away but can confirm the noise seems to come from the front end. I have had the rear box replaced so this should not be the problem. What other mountings are there for the exhaust forward of the rear box?

Thanks

Problem was the belt tensioner. This was highlighted in another thread on this subject.Asood of a job apparently but a lot quieter now.
Many thanks.

The most common faults are the prop shaft center bearing, this can be checked unde the car for any play, and the spiders at each end of the shaft, all aggravated by worn engine mounts that allow the engine to tip out of line
