Hi there,

Can anyone help me-

I have a sprinter 308cdi, was a great van until i was in the fast lane and a clicking belt type noise started. the noise got louder and faster and 10 seconds later the engine cut out. The edc light then came on. I pulled into the hard shoulder and retried starting- no joy. was turning over without any weird noises but wont start. I have checked the drive chain which is still attatched and i can find a what appears to be fan belt which also still attached.??? Im sure it sounded like a belt snapping, but cant find any missing belts?
after a £200 tow home im hoping its nothing major!

ANY IDES FOLKS?

!! Can any one help me !!

i have a 313cdi sprinter 2002 lwb which has done 145k.
I died out on me yesterday.
i was driving on the motorway when heard a kind of ticking noise and the van felt as if it was going to cut out ,which did do and the orange warning light with the tyre came on. at first i thought the belt was gone snap or snapped but they are chain driven and only have a fan belt. when i parked on the hard shoulder the van would not start again but was ticking over.

Has any one had the same problem?????????
or know what it could be??

Any news yet?

The orange tyre symbol means a malfunction in either the ASR(Acceleration skid control-a form of traction control using the brakes to reduce wheelspin), BAS(emergency brake assist, only with ESP stability control which I think the 313 has as standard) or with sprintshift, Pull-away assist(a system that keeps the footbrake on for approx 2 seconds while the foot is moved from brake pedal to accelarator).

I think this orange light is a red herring as the manual seems to suggest that it only goes off once the engine is running which yours ain't.

The clicking noise could be a multitude of things. Is the timing chain still in place when viewed through the oil filler cap? Is there fuel in the fuel lines by the high pressure fuel pump at the front of the engine? If there is lots of air bubbles maybe the fuel pump has failed, you may need to slide back the black plastic cover to see the transparent fuel lines. Bubbles in the fuel lines could also mean you have run out of fuel, I assume you have checked as you could have a sticky fuel gauge.

Other than that I think you would be better getting someone to look at it as remote diagnosis is tricky without more hard evidence.

When you say it was ticking over nicely I take it you mean it would turn over ok but not start?

hi thanks for the reply,
i had the van checked at the Merc dealer and the told me the injectors had been leaking and they may have sized up. The leaking fuel had coked over the outside of the injectors and turned hard, it looks like greese but is hard. They said that the injectors might break if the are taken out. The van does not start now. Strangley i have a receipt for the injectors being changed a month and half ago before i owned the van. contacted the company in london and was blagged about getting called back but this did not happen.
the dealers priced me at £3200 to completely repair and replace the parts nad 4500 to replace the engine. But i am sur i can get this job repaired between £900-£1500. i have been qouted for a replacement engine at £1500 on 42k.

I would have thought that the job of replacing the injectors would be less than £3200 unless they are going to replace the head at the same time? Last time I had some injectors done under warranty I was told that they cost £180 + fitting + VAT each. I have seen a leaking injector in a LDV van in the past and I thought it looked like hard tar dribbling from the injector.

Don't discount the new engine. I have had a new merc engine under warranty and it came complete with turbo, injectors, Fuel filter, wiring loom, factory engine oil and if you check on the Merc website all merc supplied parts come with a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty http://www2.mercedes-benz.co.uk/con.../aftersales/genuine_parts/parts_warranty.html

If you are a high miler then you could have 100k on the clock before this 'new' warranty runs out.

It does look as though the previous injector repair was a cock up if a few of them have since been leaking but as you were not the customer I am not sure where you would stand with this.

You probly asked Dell boy to the job! just kidding.

I Was qouted £170 for each injector by the Dealer with exchanging the old ones, other wise they are £200 and i have sourced some via the garage for £120 each. I dont think the labour will be much to fit all of them all max £100.

Hi mate i had the injectors out and one them nearist to the chassi was very very hard to take to take out. Apparantly they that one was very badly coked. I have got a new rocker cover, gasket, injectors, seals and clamps ready to put in place today, but i have a problem i dont know if the holes in the head where the injectors sit are damaged or not as there quite a bit dirt in them, the rims look ok. When my injectors went the van would not start again so iam not sure what to do.

any advice from anyone????
Has any had the same problems????

I just had all the parts fitted but for some reason the engine is spitting deisel out of the injectors holes, everything is tight with new seals. the garge is going to refit them tomorrow again, i fear the worst 'head' will need replacing!

How old is your sprinter? Some goodwill is being applied to sprinter injectors needing replacement after the warranty has expired, ask your dealer to do an 'esculab' this is a goodwill system from merc based on mileage/age but you will often get something. Is it not uncommong for the sprinters to leak fuel causing a carbon build up on the head, this carbon will need removing and depending on how bad can take a 2-5 hours or in worse cases can result in the replacement of the cylinder head.
