Hi. I'm not sure if this will help but here you go...
Originally sprinters were 208, 210 and 212. Or 308, 310 and 312. The 2's are 2.6 ton gross vehicle weight and the 3's are 3.5 tons. The 08, 10 or 12 is the bhp. 08=80 bhp, 10=100 and 12=120 (give or take a few bhp). I had a 208 which although was a great reliable van it was underpowered and became growly at about 65mph. Around the same time I hired a 310 and it was much more powerful and seemed not so growly at higher speeds. It was also MORE economical.
Newer sprinters (approx V reg onwards) are badged 208, 211 and 213. Or 308, 311 and 313 - all cdi's. All share the same 2150cc engine but range thru 82, 110 or 130 bhp. There is also a 316 version with a 2.7 engine and 160 bhp, but i'm not sure if it's available in the 2.6 tonner. There are a few differences. The final drive (differential) varies. A general rule is the 2's and the 308 had a different ratio than that of the 311 upwards. Therefore the 308 travelling at 70mph is doing 3250rpm, whereas a 311 at the same speed is 2750. I know this as I currently have a 308cdi but work beside two 311 vans. This explains the growlyness (< is that a word) and the fuel consumption. Also the turbo on the 08 is different from that on the higher output versions. Obviously wheel size also differs from 2's to 3's, and there are different diff ratios again for dropsides etc. My 308 does around 29-31 mpg average driving combining motorway/trunk roads/loaded/empty etc but the 311 can get 35mpg. Each engine can be "beefed up" to the next level. My 308 can be upped to 110bhp, the 311 to 130bhp etc.
If you are considering which to buy then my advice is simple...buy a 311, or if it's an older model go for the 310. The 2's and the 308's are growly and thirsty, and although the 312 or 313 would be a damn nice drive I reckon if you drove them heavy footed you would feel it in your wallet too.
The same principal rules with the bhp apply for the Vito vans with the 07, 10 and 12. Or the cdi's badged 08, 11 and 13.
I'm just reading back through that I hope I've not bamboozled you too much and that the info is of some help.
hi there, thanks for that info, does help somewhat,i've actually got a older 308 m reg but like you say a bit underpowered,so i was considering either changing the engine to a 310 or look at another diff or gearbox...have too look in to it a bit further, thanks again.P
