Hi, I have a van question, if allowed, has anyone changed the damper/ (small ram) that is part of the belt tensioner on the 5 cylinder turbo diesel, mine is a 310 sprinter van, but same in some cars I think.
The bottom bolt will not unscrew far enough to let it free, do I have to take off the fan and pulley to remove this damper, thank's in advance for any replies Roy

hi i do beleive you have to remove the pully. if the bolt was an eighth of an inch shorter it would clear the pulley.

have fun

Sprinter van tensioning system ram

Sorry to tell you this is not the nicest job inthe world. :( I had to do this a long time ago on my 310 non turbo [the previouse model ]. We finished up with the front panel and the rad off to get at it in comfort.Watch your fingers cos if I remember correctly there is one hell of a lot of tension on the spring

good luck Mick J

Belt damper

Hi,
I replaced the damper on my C250 (605, 5 cyl non turbo). I had the same problem you did, the bolt not coming out far enough to get the old damper out. I got it out by brute force, and fitted the new one by grinding a bit out of the "eye" to clear the bolt. I could not see how to remove the fan either. there is hex recess in the front of the fan pulley, do I put a big allen key in this to hold the spindle while I loosen the fan?. But how do you turn the fan? Advice from a professional would help here.

Regards Peter

On my 190 diesel the fan is held on by a single bolt which has a left hand thread Put a spanner or Allen key on it and hit with a hammer to shock the bolt loose.
Remove the fan then remove the fan hub assembly then remove the damper easy job.
