Since buying my W 200 320 CDI in December 2006 I have done 15,000 miles, averaging 37.9 mpg (I run a log of all expenses including all fuel).

95% of the results per refill were in the range 36.5 to 41.5.

My 320CDi estate gives:-

Town: 24-28mpg (excluding rush hour crawl)

Motorway: 38-42 (depending on how heavy footed you are, the 42 figure represents 70mph)

A roads: 36-46 (the best I have seen was 46mpg at a steady 40-50mph)

Average: 33-34 (over 3000 miles)

I would imagine that a better average than mine is achievable as most of my motoring is shortish journeys. As a matter of interest I have just replaced the injector nozzles on all six cylinders (ouch) and it is noticable that the engine is about 5-10% more economical and runs a lot smoother (mileage 62K)

Hope this helps!

Although a bit smaller than the E, CLS and S class. My C class 320 Cdi have great mpg and I get the following:-

Since delivery avg 36.8 mpg. 19700 mls.

At 60 I have seen 50.3 mpg.

At 70 approx 48 mpg.

At 80 approx 44 mpg.

Town approx 29-32.

Been running a CLS for about 2 months on regular 140 mile journeys, mainly motorway miles with a little bit of urban driving at either end, always seem to return 43 mpg or thereabouts, according to the computer.

I'm thinking my computer's wrong :p

Or I need to go more than 45mph.

(Being honest, cruising speed at legal limits, relatively light traffic, a minimum of hard accelerations or stop/start motoring, probably about the best conditions for economical driving you can get. Having said all that, I'm amazed with the figures, only a few mpg less than our 1.5 (petrol) Yaris)

E 320 CDi Estate, mostly motorways but also cross- country A-roads, "brisk" driving style (why have it & not use it?), average over 31,709 miles during the last 12 months has been 31.4 mpg. Had the front tracking done a couple of months ago and that made a noticeable difference.

Hope this helps.

PS Don't trust the on-board display - mine is around 10%~15% optimistic

I'm glad you mentioned the on board display. I've worked mine out many a time and found the computer to be way out.

It oftan gives a reading of about 40 mpg, when 32 - 34 is a far more realistic figure.

Anyone else found this?

E320cdi saloon driven with manners showing 39.2 since last reset (service) and best I've seen is 48.3 on a motorway run at 65MPH.

Cheers

Well done. I have done that too, in my W211 back in 2006. A guy from our US business was sitting beside me at the time and said it compared favourably with his SUV (12mpg under similar conditions) - well, that's not what he said, but that's what he meant!

I would think that, in today's traffic conditions and with today's fuel costs, more people will "discover" just how fuel efficient these cars can be. ;):)

36.59 mpg average for my IL6 E320CDI from actual usage over ~110K miles. The trip computer used to say more (as per my signature) I would as per above expect the W220 to be a couple of MPG less

Hi I'm a newbie, and Blobcat's figures throughout the lifetime of his W210 make interesting reading... as I have just bought one! 2000W E320 CDi Avantgarde Saloon Trip Auto one owner 69,000 miles full MB history - mint inside and out... I thought a good buy at £4,500. There will be no big depreciation factor for me!! Sorry to have gone off topic.... the MPG return looks to be very acceptable and not what most people would expect. On the whole I'm glad I didn't opt for an 04 Vectra or Mondeo at the same money!!

Hi BC,

Correct. My overall consumption in a W 211 (43,000 miles, 2003-2006) was 39 mpg and so far my W220 (Dec 2006 to date) is averaging 37.9.

my W211 E320CDI averages around the 38 - 40 mpg but most of my runs are 130 round trips but on mixture of M, A & B roads. Computer is currently showing 40.3mpg across 9,540 miles since last service.

If my trip is reading 15% over, then I'd rather not know - usually shows about 21mpg... (not a diesel, of course!). Glad the other car is an Audi A2 TDi that does mid 50's.
