Hello, I'm having some techical difficulties with my convertable top. The roof goes up and down well, but when in the on/locked position the roof indicator light flashes as if it is not recognizing that the roof is indeed sucured. The trunk will not open either, again as if it appears that the roof is still off/down? Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,
Shane

Just out of interest, I checked Shane's VIN on the Russian Club's site...

It is correct! (listed the car as a Brilliant Silver CLK320 - amazed me too!)

But it also gives a CHASSIS number as 2084651T046497, which looks more like the VINs I'm used to.

I thought ALL 208s VINs started with WDB208

My 2c worth...

Just another thing...

Sticking WDB in front of the chassis no ie. WDB2084651T046497 and entering that into the Russian site, brings up the same car as WDBLK65G9YT046497

It's a Canadian delivered car, so perhaps their VINs are different but cross-matched to a conventional VIN

I dunno...

Anyway, I'm interested in Shane's problem because my cabrio did the same thing, but only once. I turned off the ignition for a few minutes, retracted and then raised the soft top and the problem has never returned (yet!).

Cheers,

Rob

Thanks Malcolm, I look forward to hearing back from you about the roof.
....also, My "BAS Visit Workshop" warning light seems to come on once in a while. Any ideas what may be causing this?

I have been through 35 pages on the roof, so although the roof completes the cycle one of the limit switches must be faulty, if the windows and roll bar go up,if they were up before makes it very hard.

The last funtion is the locking of the cylinders above the screen, Have you tried the manually.

There are 15 limit switches on the car, you may have to get diagnosis to find the right one.

As there is nothing listed for the non opening boot, and the last operation is the locking above the screen I would look there first

Best I can do for now

We (my wife and I) have not had our CLK 230 K Cabriolet long, but this forum has already set me (as the family fixer) along a path of knowledge that can only benefit the car and us in the long term. So before I start, a big thanks to 'Television' and the likes for putting such a great effort into the forum.

It's therefore only fitting that any knowledge I may glean along the way should be passed back by way of thanks.

Roof Woes
After a trip away offshore I thought... nice warm (hot?) day, I'll drop the roof. Popped the manual release and flicked the switch, all windows dropped, ... but no action on the roof??

Delved into things a little and ended up accessing the electro hydraulic pump unit. I noticed that it had the same relay fitted (same Merc part number) as another relay installed right next to the fuse unit in the boot (USA?= trunk).
Swapped them over and hey presto! the engine wouldn't start :(
Some would consider that a retrograde step but to me it was a result!

It seemed that the roof relay was faulty. Popped them back in theri original positions and the engine started. So, today I picked up a couple (for good measure) of relays from my local Merc dealer at Euro 35.44 each (Part number: A002 542 13 19/26) The 19/26 may be because the same (numbered) relay has two applications.. probably the roof hydraulics and the fuel pump.

I'll let you know later what the end result was.

The result was a winner :D

It was the relay at fault. I changed it out without removing any panels... Or better to say that my wife was able to swap the pump relay out through the round access hole next to the manual roof operation hole. She has smaller hands than me!

So in short... W208 CLK Cabriolet
If your roof operation fails you might want to try swapping over the two relays mentioned above. If the engine then fails to start you can be sure that the roof relay has failed.

The part number is: A002 542 13 19/26

Interestingly Mercedes have been shopping around in their parts sourcing.
Three relays.. all have the same part number.
Made in three different countries: Portugal, Spain and the USA!

We've got the same problem!

We have a 2002 CLK200 Kompressor convertable.

The roof closes to the point that we have to lock the header rail but the red switch stays illuminated. The boot won't open either - I guess because the car still thinks the hood is open.

Maybe I'm mis-reading (it is early! lol) but was there a definitive answer, or set of steps, given to solve this problem?

Many thanks in advance.

This should just be a switch in the top rail, you are right in say that the lamp stays on and the boot will not work as the car thinks that the roof operation is not complete.

I will look it up for you later in the day

I think I have a similar problem on 320clk 2001.

Please can you let me know precisely where I look to find the two relays you refer to.

Thank you

one is next to the roof pump, you need to strip down the back of the boot area to get to it, the other is in the fuse box area at the rear right of the boot. just swap the two relays over, if it is that at fault then the roof will start to work, and the engine will cut out after a few mins of running due to lack of fuel
