2003 320CLK
Hello members, just joined and hoping to get some help, and give some if able. Ive owned my 2003 320CLK from new and still only have around 35k on the clock. The only serious fault (and it was a big one) that ive had, was the Automatic Gearbox. A fault developed a year or so ago and after some checks, turned out to be a fairly well known (but not to me) problem involving radiator, leaking into and contaminating the transmission, torque converter. Cost a lot to fix, but worth it to me due to condition of car.

A fault has just developed with my Xenon headlights. Switched on lights, all good, during driving I turned on high beam and after a couple of seconds the drivers side high beam went off, warning light on dash. When i turned on high beam again, the same thing, a few seconds then off. I then noticed that when the high beam was on, the light would cycle, on for a few seconds then off, then repeat. Ive done a little reading and now know of the Bulb/Igniter/Ballast set up which is used. My theory is that its unlikely to be the bulb, as it lights, but doesnt remain on. Then its been suggested that 90% of problems seem to be ballast. So what do members suggest my approach should be, in order of diagnosis. Im an enginner so the spanner work is no problem, just need some guidance from those who know, many thanks.

Swap bulb left to right to eliminate. Then go from there.
Have swapped bulbs and fault remains, high beam comes on, few seconds and its off and I can hear what sounds like a relay or something click as it goes off. Ive also noticed some moisture on the inside of the headlight unit which is drivers side, passenger headlight clear. Is the next step healights out to swap Ignitor or Ballasts to isolate fault?

Sounds like a plan as is get a small bag of silica tie a cord to it put in headlight for a day or 2 to absorb moisture which prob caused prob. Try find out how it gets in. Mb hav a grand track record for not being able to keep moisture /water out of their cars and parts thereof.

Remove both headlights and swap left to right as a unit. Identify if it follows the light.
If it does swap parts left to right to identify which component.
