!988 300TE 4 -MATIC (165K only! )
My old merc's 4 matic has seemed to stop working recently. The 4 matic light on dash flashes now & again , is it something to do with brakes as it seems to stop flashing when footbrake is applied?

Check the hydraulic fluid level in the plastic resevoir front lh side of engine compartment. Either a dipstick under a black rubber cap or a sight glass on some models. If light stays on after top up, disconnect battery for a couple of minutes.

Does your model have to have the brake pedal pressed in order for a gear to be selected?
