4 speed auto box 1st to 2nd

Hi

When I select gear limiter 2 on my 4 speed auto (1989 230te)
it wont change from 1st to 2nd unless you thrash it up to the red line!
It doest seem to matter if I select Standard or Economy either.
It just stays in 1st untill the red line. :?

Any ideas or is this just normal.

When using E (Economy) the gear box selects 2nd gear to move off in, I don't beleive 1st is used at all. 1st gear is only used in S (Standard).
Although this does not quite explain why you have to push it to the red line to get it to change up? I know that if I am harsh with the accelerator that I can push it to the red line before it changes, but in normal driving this is not the case.

As far as I know the information I have provided is correct.

230te auto gear change problem?

Hi,

I have asked this question before in a roundabout way.
I have an 1989 230te auto, when gear limiter 2 is selected it starts in gear 1 as normal but wont change up until you bury the throttle into the floor and it hits the rev limiter @ 6000 then changes up to gear 2... is this normal or do I have a problem?
