I have a 1978 model of the 450slc. It has doen about 200,000 miles and is in sound mechanical condition. But the bodywork needs attention and I cannot decide whether to spend £5,000 to £10,000 to do this. Anybody got any ideas on this

I think it depends what you want from the car. My perspective is this:

  • If you are contemplating sale any time soon, then you are unlikely to get the cost of the repairs back - certainly not at the upper end of your costing.
  • If you want to keep and enjoy the car for a long time to come and the pleasure of it is worth the money, then fine.
Another option is to sell (or keep for spares) and buy one that is in better nick bodywork-wise. From my casual perusal of ads, you ought to find one for up to £7,500.

Thanks for your thoughts. I do like using it, but I cannot decide on the two points you made. But its good to hear it from others.
