A friend of mines dad has just aquired a rather shoddy example of the above, i havent had a chance to have a good nose around yet, but he asked me (he knows nowt about cars at all) what the 4matic stood for. I said to him i think its means 4 wheel drive automatic.

is that right? and if so, im sure ive read a couple of bad things about them?

These 4matics are not as dodgy as everyone seems to think I spoke to my Mercedes mechanic he works for a main dealer and privately for me and he says he?s only had one instance of a 4matic needing a transfer box and that was possibly down to an accident where the car went off road.

He recommends I get one as a cheap ski car. Plenty around for under £3,000.

Only problems can be the C gasket which is common to all 300 sohc engines.

Otherwise bullet proof Mercedes build quality.

Hi

I wish you told that to the 3 customers we have had to tell them their transfer box was knackered. Two we have fitted £1500 just for the box plus labour. The other broke down on him while in the back end of no where. He had to get the local dealer to fit it. Ouccchhhh.

So I don't quite agree with you technician.
