Hi All,

In the spirit of the petrol/diesel discussion here's another one.

There has been a lot on TV recently about 4WD's which I think misses the point by just going on about fuel consumption. I think there are other issues to contend with;

(1) Visibility
Owners claim these vehicles offer better visibility. Straight ahead this may be true but my experience of driving these vehicles is that you simply can't see what's immediately to your sides or behind you. This is OK if you don't care but I prefer to know....The guy who recently reversed his 4WD into me obviously didn't lose too much sleep over this. Personally I find them really hard to drive (safely) in town.

(2) Safety
Hmmm....for little Johnny in his car seat in the back maybe - for anyone outside not. Too heavy to stop well (Ok apart from the X5's and Cayenne's). Too tall to corner (ask my mate who rolled a Discovery CHANGING LANES on motorway). C**p steering (to suit off-road driving which never happens). And if one of these machines hits your normal car side on it's goodnight Vienna. All the safety aids in my W202 count for nothing as the bull bar crushes my skull. Nice.

(3) Space
Nope. If you want a spacious BMW get 5 series touring. Or an E Class. Am I missing something here?

(4) Off Road Ability
Please.......what's the point of dragging two Massey Ferguesons about underneath you if you never use the off road ability and creates all the problems with handling and saftey above.

(5) You're a Farmer.
Well how come my cousin who has a hill farm in Northumberland can manage with a rwd pickup truck? Always has done.

(6) Fuel consumption
Well I drive a C43 so can't claim to be looking after the planet too well. I know I'll jack it up 2 feet, fit an enormous agricultural gear box and 4WD system underneath and fill all cavities with lead. Or maybe not.

(7) You are A UN Peace Inspector.
OK - you can have Nissan Patrol. Just don't bring it to West London thanks.

So they offer poor visibility, poor stopping and poor cornering. They wiegh too much and the weight is too high. Therefore they are more likely to be involved in accidents. And those accidents tend to kill or seriously injure way more people because of their height. And as for off road ability, even a hill farmer doesn't need one.

So unless you are in the UN (in a place without proper roads) or if you regularly tow things in muddy fields what's the point?

Hi Angus,

The point is ...... It is yet another throw back from the States that we have adopted for absolutely no reason whatsoever !!

OK - If you live in the middle of nowhere somewhere south of Texas then I fully endorse your ownership. Or... maybe you live in Canada where the temperature regularly gets down to minus 30 along with SERIOUS snow (I know, I've seen it).. Again I can see a need and use for these machines.

But alas noooooo... we live in Blighty where the worst mother nature throws at us is.......ummm...... well...... I drizzly day and the odd gust of wind. Hardly a compelling argument to strap Little Johnny in the armour plated, bullet proof glass protected ex military vehicle for a 20 second journey to the local primary school !!!

I'll stop now & take my medication... Oh and don't get me started on Hummers please !!!!....lol

My last car was a 4wd. The things I liked:

1 Visibility in traffic - can see further
2 Room - there was a lot inside
3 Off road ability - only joking! Although I could waft over speed humps without wincing
4 Surprisingly good brakes (actually) and not bad off the mark
5 Ermm

Things I didn't like:

1 Putting lots of fuel in it all the time
2 Going around corners
3 My wife accusing me of having a drug dealers car 'cause it had blacked out windows
4 Not going very fast most of the time
5 Wind noise

The safety issue I would debate with a little. Sure, if you're inside you're safer and sure, if you're hit by one you'll probably get mashed. However, they are slower so coupled with a better view of the road ahead I would argue that they are less likely to be involved in an accident. So honours even: Less likely to hit someone but more likely to kill them when you do. Manouvering bumps don't count. Bull bars should be banned anyway.

I didn't want a people carrier and my ML fitted the bill for the last four years.

I can see further up the motorway in my ML270, as I can see above the cars in front (sorry about you guys behind me...). it eats Motorway miles (104,000 so far).

I can sit 7 adults in forward facing comfort, get 26mpg, and I dont get stuck in fields when parking at events or in snow. I can help attractive young ladies who are stuck in same, or young men with attractive young ladies.

I don't need a 7 seater now kids are being encouraged to leave home so am getting a C saloon.

I once drove

a Boeing 757, and a 767, and they afforded me a great view ahead, but I wouldn't want one on my driveway.
I think the point being made is most of the people who have them never do much more than mount a kerb or waft over a speed bump, and frankly, a lot of them are dangerous behind a tesco shopping trolley, let alone a 4x4. They seem to think that buying a "safe" car makes them a safe driver, and consider the purchase price to their guarantee of immortality.
We of course, being dyed in the wool Merc types know that passive safety isn't the be all and the end all. A case of brains and guts switched on, regardless of what you are driving along in. ( and be careful near the 4x4s on the school run)

sunderland...where ?......just south of scotland..
well i totally agree with angus and the editor, they are dangerous and uneccesary vechile to be on the road, and having drove everything from a 7.5 tonne wagon down over,i can tell you there is no use for them at all, except to think you are a status symbol, and as for safety, probably one of the most dangerous vehicle i have ever drove, terrible cornering, just so unstable, and try and get one of them to stop in a hurry in the wet......oh what fun !.....not !!!.
And as for motorways, because they are so unstable the are even worse than a van to drive in high winds.......i have seen quite a few overturned by high winds or as angus says changing lanes on a motorway..........and to tow a caravan with one is SUICIDAL !!!!.......what are you playing at ?.......lol......give me my lwb sprinter any day of the week.
And hummers, come on editor lets here it......lol............iI will just say they are the ugliest thing i have ever seen and stop there b4 i get banned :lol:

my 4x4 did the following.

0-62mph.....5.6secs...144mph. it was the best car i have ever had for road holding, ever. very few cars, and I mean very few, could keep up with it.

it also and i admit i was driving like a grandad, did 42mpg once. to blackpool and back...over 132miles round trip.

and it cost around £21k new...in black. 5 seats, leather air con...it was good and it was very well built. just a bit cheap type of interior....

and the boy race image of a subaru WRX did take some getting over....but it was a 4x4.

so maybe we should have said a offroad type car just so me and a few others dont get confused.....

Funny... The CRV will take an enormous amount of abuse, as will the Cayenne (sp?) ...

Sad fact is these vans are here to stay and the more of them we get the only safer option is to join them... But for my part a W140 S500 would be much nicer :)

by the way for those slating/praising models you should state the car that you like dislike to give a better balance of your argument :)

I have driven:
Honda CRV Liked it very stable but needs the US 2.8 instead of the 2.0 the UK gets :(
Grand Cheroke (sp?) Liked but put of by tails of woes from other owners
ML - was out classed by the honda :(
been driven in a cayenne turbo and thought it was a mad car !
been driven in a Rav4 nice car lots of room...

I Would like a volvo X90 t5 or a Lexus RX400 if we have to get another one

the Land Cruiser Amazon is just plain daft :)

Shrekky,

I agree - when ever I driven a rented Transit or equivalent I have actually found the handling fine - but then they are much lower to the ground than a 4X4 (no need to house a tractor underneath).

SLinKyjoe,

Scoobies are of course excepted from my definition of 4X4's. I have been seriously tempted.....:)

Peterchurch,

The Cayenne Turbo is an amazing triumph of computers over physics. Still wouldn't want to be hit by one though.

996jimbo,

Your comment about 4X4's (well offroaders) going a bit slower is no doubt generally correct unless it's a Cayenne.

Myros,

Loved the 757/767 forward visibility comment :) :)

I agree with what has been said about all these fancy 4x4s......People buy them and never even go out of town with them.....most of them are not very good off road anyway and are just used for the school run........But proper offroading can be really good fun.
