According to the papers this weekend four wheel drives, and any other car with more than 250g/km, will pay a high level of road tax from budget day onwards.

It'll likely be a small amount extra, any idea what's coming?

Sounds like they will add yet another level on top of the one we all pay anyway. Once again, our Scottish Government legislating for Chelsea. In any case its blatant imbecile leftie bike riding lentil swilling policy for the soundbite. God I HATE Brown.

Those of us who need a 4x4 but aren't rich enough to buy the 'evil' 4l v8 ones will be hit. Those who do have these tree killing London school run monsters and only see a muddy field on their 50'' plasmas will simply fund it out of their city bonusses. But then as Labour hate country folk I guess its a double whammy from their point of view!

Bring it on - My mate has a landrover (1980 ish) that is sat on private land and does a few hundred miles a year (tip run, tow something somewhere kind of stuff) So why should he be forced to pay this high rate of Tax? He normally rides a motorbike (has a 1998 Honda with over 110,000 miles clocked) for all his daily running about. Just another form of punnishing those that do not do what the government want - Bunch of t*ssers the lot of them.

The new tax, as meagre as it is, is aimed at the people who clog up the roads with big vehicles that don't need them.

It's pointless, as these people have loads of money and they don't care. The wrong people are now going to suffer for somebody elses stupidity. It makes you wonder about the goverment.

... another reason to keep my trustie ML :-D
Just come back from Niederlassung Dusseldorf after viewing an M320CDI, nice car, but bit like a Volvo XC90. Much rather spend my 40G on upgrading to a full HGV motorhome (which is taxed less than a new 4x4 :D)

Hi Folks,
Read this table from the DVLA. Looks like the new band G only applies to new cars bought after 23rd March 2006. Old 4x4 seem to be totally off the hook.

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/Changes_to_cost_of_vehicle_tax.htm

I'm still really angry that road tax has shot up so much. The band F increase of 25 Quid catches out most Mercs, including the diesels, that hover around the 190g/km mark. That's close to 2p per litre equivalent on fuel. Criminal.

So as I read it, everyone has to pay an increase above the annual inflation rate again.
There is a joke among ex pat's (those that leave the country to live). LAST ONE OFF THE ISLAND, TURN THE LIGHTS OFF. The way we are moving, paying people to sit at home watching TV all day, I will consider this if I can see no improvement in the next few years. Instead of paying 19K for a second hand car that has a poor after sales service I'll buy something that costs a quarter of that and remorgage to buy something abroad.
OK moan over - Maybe its just me in a bad mood. Again :|
My Robin that does about 2K a year even goes up :(

From 1993 to 2000, I paid all my tax in the UK, even though Ive only worked in the UK 2 years of my life! Since 2000, and the advent of a policy called IR35, Adolf Blair and cronies made it cheaper for me to pay taxes to the governments from whom I was earning... Germany used to be way higher taxes, not now! England lost out on my tax revenue, just to keep Smug Adolf Blair happy with his dimwit policies...and theres at least 50,000 of us Islanders in Germany alone! What a Pillock! ... As davebox says... Last one off the island, please turn out the lights!

Well my end of Y2K 'E' only went up £5, my wifes new Honda went up £25, My bikes went up £1 and £2 respectively. It's just another way of raising money, if they don't put it on fuel they will hide it elsewhere. Income tax hasn't changed for awhile but we now have 11% National Insurance. I'm not going to get depressed though. Just open another bottle of red which I didn't pay uk tax on.
