Help
I have just been informed by my MB Dealer that I have 5 Failed injectors.
My ML cut out on me in the middle of the road suddenly - out of the blue.
I have experienced NO spluttering / missing or any other performance symptoms. It just went DEAD without notice.

Can this be possible??? Has anybody heard of similar experiences?

I am in the engineering field myself, and can't get my head around the fact that ALL injectors could fail simultaneously.!!!

Dealer says "Leak Pressure test" shows clearly the problem.

This is likely to cost me about SAR 25 000 (South African Rand) approx 1 800 GBP.

Neither can i.......and i dont believe it!

Get a 2nd opinion.

.."It just went DEAD without notice".................Possibly crank-shaft sensor has failed......but more diagnostics should be carried out first.

Could it be injector control?
I have had experience of 3 injectors going one after the other in days of each other, but not all at the same instant.

No way is it the injectors, like in the UK they do not know what they are doing.

To me it sounds like the crankshaft sensor,, you can measure it, it should read 1k ohms

75000km 2005 model

I asked dealer if he replaced the parts, could I take the old ones and have them tested independantly. He told me that he has to send them to MB Head Office and I could get them back only after 90 days.!!! It has something to do with the motorplan policies??

thanx for the feedback

Oh yes they also said they would email me the pics of the test results

Ask him if he placed it on the star diagnosis machine, if he did what was the codes. Injectors do not normally cut out, one goes down, ie looses pressure and normally wont start when warm. I think there is a bigger story here, what other symptoms did you have? From what you have said there is another fault, like Malcom said, I feel they are not sure what is wrong and starting with basics at your expense, possibly the injectors are leaking past a bit to much fuel but this would give you bad staring not cutting out.

Ask them if they are able to send them to an independant fuel injection engineer and have them tested/repaired this will cost a lot less than new ones. If the high pressure pump failed this would give cut out symptoms, but normally you get warnings of this. ie, bad staring, agin this would show up on star.
Hope it helps.

Yes he says he did, and will e-mail me response codes. Will post them when I get them.

But still sitting with same problem, 3 days NO car. No real answer. No idea of when.
Man this really sucks.

Hang on - regardless of the price of injectors, it would take me about 60 minutes to replace all 6 on mine.

So why is the quote so expensive? Even programming and pressure testing them can't take that long. And even after all that, each injector is a fairly simple device and fully serviceable isn't it? So why replace them at all, why not just ****** fix them?

I'm of the same opinion as everyone else - they don't know what they're doing. Get it on the computer and have the codes read.

No it makes no sense and sounds like a rip off, but ..
by the sound of it, this is covered by some sort of warranty? If so just let them sort it. Worst case, you get shiny new injectors.

Hi rod
You said "Dealer says "Leak Pressure test" shows clearly the problem."

I'm just wondering if the engine would have to be running to establish "Leak Pressure test" obviously if this is the case then they have got the engine running maybe someone could elaborate on this theory

One of my injectors failed and the car would not start (on a common rail so if one goes, none will kick in). MB 1st told me one was out and then just as they were beginning to do the work, I was told they were replacing all 4 !! Thankfully I got to them in time and only one was replaced.

I would def look for a second opinion on this one, unfortunately most of us are at the mercy of the dealers :(

The only other thing I've seen like this was serious fuel contamination.

hi, there is a tiny seal on pressure valve at back end of fuel rail which commonly splits and will cause engine to cut out through lack of pressure, well worth a check only costs a couple of pounds and not a lot of work to fit

For your info,
If they are replacing the injectors the genuine ones are quite expensive as much as £350 each.
A leak test can be simply carried out by removing engine covers.

Remove clips holding leak of pipe to each injector.

Disconnect and plug the return pipe after the last injector.

Disconnect the electrical cable from each injector.

Now, have a friend turn the engine over and watch the tops of the injectors (where the leak off pipe was inserted)

A faulty injector is instantly recognisable as fuel will flow backwards through the top.

If no fuel flows through then the injectors are Ok for holding pressure.

Tell your friend to stop turning the engine over.

Hope this helps.
