The 5spd would be considered a better box, as it is electronicaly controlled, i have 5spd with tipshift and it is superb, however there has been problems with these boxes, so on an older car the 4spd may be better from a reliability point of view. I think most will agree that if you have 5spd (7226) electronic type, then changing the fluid appears to keep them reliable.

4 speed is last years (centuries) technology  the 5 speed is an electronically controlled box with its own GCU and it alters the changes and the gears selected in an adaptive way to suit your driving style.

So if you potter around it will start in second and change up early and if you give it some welly it will hold onto the gears and change later and start in first gear whereas the 4 speed will start in second gear if you select the E/W setting and first if you select S but other than that you are limited to moving the gear selctor or actuating the kickdown switch. The five speed also has an O/D top gear and a torque convertor lock so you get much better MPG - it also is a lovely box to have in your car - mine has the 4 speed sob sob sob
