Greetings All,
I'm over here in the U.S. and 5 speed W123's were never imported. I would love to install a 5 speed into a 81-84 300D or into my Euro version 240D. Can anyone give me any info regarding the availability of 5 a speed for W123's in the UK or give me a starting place to find one?

Thanks!

They weren't popular over here either - they're horrible boxes.

What is so horrible about them?

A 5-speed is pretty much the holy grail of anyone with a manual transmission over here, myself included.

I think the term used here is woolly and not much feel

I think I read somewhere that the 240d didn't have enough power to make use of the taller 5th gear.

That may be true but they were sold with them anyways. I have a friend in Texas that bought a Gray-Market 240D with a 5-speed and hydropneumatic SLS in the rear. He transplanted the 5-speed into his 300TD.

He really likes it and got a good boost in MPG but he has been having a vibration problem in 5th gear.

My question still stands, anybody know where or how I can get a 5 speed that will work in a 240D or 300D, W123?

Thanks!

If you don't mind getting one shipped from the UK, try www.classicmercedesbenz.co.uk
I had a W123 230E with a 5 speed box and agree that it was horrible and made the car impossible to drive smoothly. I kept it for about a month before getting rid of it.
