Does anyone know a transmission specialist (Greater London area) who will rebuild the early 5 speed auto (722.5) that is in my '92 300TE-24. Reverse gear has finally gone totally AWOL which I think is a known fault with these boxes. My local Merc specialist isn't interested.

The gear shifts have always been smooth and strong with no flaring, and the oil is clean and recently changed (with filter). I seem to recall a post saying that this is not a valve body problem but sticking clutches, but is a major overhaul to fix.

Alternatively if anyone is breaking a car with M104 motor and decent trans, I'm interested.

cheers Al

Its the B3 reverse clutch, and yes it will need an almost total stripdown to repair it :(

You might as well have a complete overhaul when it's in that many pieces.

If it were me, I would be looking for a transmission repair specialist, not a mercedes specialist. Give this document to whoever you trust to repair it http://w126.pp.ru/akp722.pdf

Good Luck,

I bought a car where this repair had been done. The bill in the history was about £400 so much less than a full rebuild

But obviously with the mileage the car is likely to have a full rebuild would be more sensible

Thanks all, that is very helpful. I'll see what I can get done.

It's one of those jobs where I'm not entirely sure the cost will be justified. The car is in reasonably good shape (and I am attached to it, especially the rapid response to a bit of welly) but I suspect I'd only get about £800 for it if I was to sell it in working order.

I guess I'll see what they estimate. Am thinking of looking for an E300 diesel, given fuel costs etc.

Hi Nick, You wouldn't happen to recall who did that job? I've just been quoted £950 + VAT for an exchange box, which is too much for what the car is worth, sadly.

Still cheaper than a E300D...

Every time I get an eyewatering bill for the CE, I just think of how much I've saved not buying another car.... (I'm including time looking as well)
